6/10-6/11

Sunday - Some pics from the night before

One side of the boat we saw marsh, houses and egrets.

The other side of the boat we saw bright lights and casinos.

Bright and early (5:30am) we were up and out of the anchorage at Atlantic City. Trying to beat low tide, we weren't the only ones. The trawler anchored by us also was moving just before we pulled anchor.
Followed him out of the inlet and into the Atlantic.

Moving northeast we were about 4-5 miles off shore.  One of our views
Lots of beautiful water.  Not as clear as the Gulf, but much better than the rivers we'd been in lately.
Saw Dolphins and a sea turtle. The day was great, with following seas.  The boat just lolled back and forth almost like rocking in a big baby bassinet.  At each major inlet, we saw huge numbers of fishing boats. As many as 25-30 boats at a time.

 Fishing here
Then off to another spot, kind of like flies.
We listened to some of these guys on the radio.  Someone caught a 43 lb something then other boats would head to that spot.

This was a long day, 12 1/2 hours, 106 miles.  To date, we have traveled 3,890 miles, over half way.
We rounded Sandy Hook, NJ and headed into the New York Harbor about 4:00pm.  Hazy, so some pictures aren't so great.
The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge,  double-decked suspension bridge that connects the boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn in New York City at the Narrows.  It has the eighth longest center span in the world.
Norwegian Star Cruise Ship passed us at the bridge.

This ship passed us doing about 22mph.
We met this cargo ship after we passed under the bridge.  The harbor was definitely busy with commercial ships as well as weekend sailboats, pleasure and fishing boats.

This was a fabulous site to see as we came into the harbor.  It's such a thrill to actually be here and experience the Statue of Liberty from our own boat.  Neither of us have ever seen the statue other than pictures so it was quite exciting to see.

Ferry boats racing this way and that.  Have to watch every which way so you don't get run over.
Like I said, hazy, but a picture of Manhattan was a must.  The tall building is the new World Trade Center.

A view of Liberty Park with the backside of the Statue of Liberty.  Couldn't believe the number of people out but it is New York/Jersey City after all.

We followed a channel along the park to just behind this spit of land to our anchorage.  There were 2 other cruising boats and a sailboat that looked like it had been there for some time.

We popped open a bottle of sparkling wine to celebrate the end of the East Coast.  What a trip it's been and it's not over yet!

Monday - A leisurely morning.  Had some housekeeping things to attend to.  The recommended marina wasn't available as the channel to it was being dredged so we opted for Newport Yacht Club and Marina.  Right across the river is the Empire State Building.

It was kind of hairy getting in as the wind had picked up.  But Cap't Jerry managed just fine.  We got checked in at the marina and walked out to see what we was close by.  Ate lunch at Bertucci's Italian Restaurant.  Nice lunch.  Back to the boat to start chores.  Need to clean.  Company coming.

Kendell and Pearl will be here Thursday, Trudy, Joe, Grace, Dylan and Rose will be here Friday.  Can't wait to see everyone.  Should be a good time.
